Gripspeak License Agreement

Version 2026-10-13 · Last updated October 13, 2026

This agreement is between you and the sole proprietor in Texas, USA, doing business as Gripspeak ("Gripspeak," "we," "us"). It covers the Gripspeak software, its updates and its documentation (together, "Gripspeak").

When you press Start in Gripspeak's setup tour, or otherwise install or use Gripspeak, you agree to this agreement. If you don't agree, don't use Gripspeak. You can get your money back under our Refund Policy.

The short version

You can use Gripspeak on one Steam Frame at a time, for as long as you like. You can get a refund within 30 days without giving a reason. Gripspeak relies on parts of Steam that Valve doesn't document or support, so a Steam update can break it, and using it is your call under your own agreement with Valve. AI polish is optional and runs through your own OpenRouter account. We make no promises beyond what consumer law requires, and our liability is limited as far as the law allows. Your legal rights as a consumer still apply. The full terms follow, and they're what counts.

1. Your license

When you buy Gripspeak, we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use it on one active Steam Frame headset at a time. The license doesn't expire and has no subscription. It ends only as Section 11 describes.

Gripspeak is licensed, not sold. We and our licensors keep every right not expressly granted to you here.

2. Acceptable use

You may not:

Otherwise you may inspect and modify Gripspeak for your own use on your licensed headset. Nothing in this agreement limits any right you have under applicable law to decompile software for interoperability, or any right an open-source license gives you (Section 6).

3. Steam, SteamVR and your headset

Gripspeak works with Steam and SteamVR through local interfaces on your headset that Valve doesn't document or support. Gripspeak isn't made, authorized or endorsed by Valve, and Valve isn't a party to this agreement. Valve can change those interfaces at any time, which can stop Gripspeak working, in part or entirely, until we release a fix, and we may not be able to fix every such change.

Your use of Steam is governed by your own agreement with Valve. You're responsible for using Gripspeak in a way that agreement allows, and any risk to your Steam account from using Gripspeak is yours. Gripspeak ignores its buttons while a game is in front unless you turn on "Work in games" in Settings.

Gripspeak changes your headset in these ways, and you agree to them:

4. Optional AI polish and other third-party services

AI polish is off unless you connect an OpenRouter account. When it's on, Gripspeak sends the text of each dictation and your custom dictionary words to OpenRouter using your own OpenRouter account and key, and OpenRouter passes them to the AI model provider shown in Settings. When Gripspeak can tell you're dictating into a password field, it doesn't send that dictation.

Your use of OpenRouter and the model providers is governed by your agreements with them, not by this agreement. OpenRouter requires users to be 18 or older. You're responsible for any charges on your OpenRouter account. We don't control these services, and we aren't responsible for their availability, cost, data handling or output.

AI output can be wrong. Polish can drop, add or change words, or change what you meant. Gripspeak runs checks that fall back to your original text when the result looks wrong, but it can't catch every error.

itch.io sells Gripspeak and handles payment. Your purchase is also governed by itch.io's own terms. itch.io isn't responsible for Gripspeak.

5. Check what you send

Speech recognition and AI polish make mistakes, including substituting words that change the meaning. Read your text before you send it. Don't rely on Gripspeak where an error could cause harm, such as emergency, medical, legal, financial or safety-critical communication.

6. Open-source components

Gripspeak's installer downloads open-source software and models from their publishers, including sherpa-onnx (Apache 2.0), NVIDIA Parakeet TDT 0.6B v2 (CC BY 4.0) and Silero VAD (MIT). Each is licensed under its own terms, which you can read under Open-source notices in Settings. Those terms apply to those components and override this agreement where the two conflict.

7. Updates and online services

We may offer updates. With update checks on (the default), Gripspeak tells you when one is available. It installs an update only when you press Update. Each update is checked against our publisher signature before it installs. Updates are covered by this agreement unless they come with new terms (Section 13).

We aren't obliged to provide updates, support or online services, except where consumer law where you live requires us to keep Gripspeak working as described for a period of time. We may change or stop online features such as feedback and language votes. Section 1's promise about the license server still applies.

8. Your rights under consumer law

If you're a consumer, the law where you live may give you rights that this agreement can't take away. For example:

Nothing in this agreement limits those rights. Sections 9 and 10 apply only as far as the law where you live allows.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

EXCEPT AS SET OUT IN SECTION 8, AND TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, GRIPSPEAK IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY. WE DISCLAIM ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON'T WARRANT THAT GRIPSPEAK WILL BE ACCURATE, ERROR-FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED, THAT IT WON'T INTERFERE WITH OTHER SOFTWARE ON YOUR HEADSET, OR THAT IT WILL KEEP WORKING WITH FUTURE VERSIONS OF STEAMOS, STEAMVR OR STEAM. WE MAKE NO WARRANTY ABOUT THIRD-PARTY SERVICES, INCLUDING OPENROUTER, AI MODEL PROVIDERS, STEAM AND ITCH.IO.

10. Limitation of liability

EXCEPT AS SET OUT IN SECTION 8, AND TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS:

THESE LIMITS APPLY TO EVERY KIND OF CLAIM, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING OUR OWN NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, AND EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD THAT SUCH DAMAGES WERE POSSIBLE.

NOTHING IN THIS AGREEMENT LIMITS OUR LIABILITY FOR DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY CAUSED BY OUR NEGLIGENCE, FOR FRAUD, FOR GROSS NEGLIGENCE OR WILFUL MISCONDUCT, OR FOR ANYTHING ELSE THE LAW DOESN'T ALLOW US TO LIMIT.

11. Ending this agreement

You can end this agreement at any time by uninstalling Gripspeak. Within 30 days of purchase, you can also get a refund under the Refund Policy.

We can end your license if you materially break Section 2. Where the breach can be fixed, we'll tell you first and end the license only if it isn't fixed within 14 days. Your license also ends if your purchase is refunded or charged back. When your license ends, you must stop using Gripspeak, and it stops working at its next license check.

Sections 2, 4, 5 and 8 through 15 continue to apply after this agreement ends.

12. Age

You must be at least 13 years old to use Gripspeak. If you're under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to this agreement for you. AI polish requires an OpenRouter account, and OpenRouter requires users to be 18 or older.

13. Changes to this agreement

If we change this agreement in a way that matters, Gripspeak will show you the new version and ask you to agree before it applies to you. If you don't agree, the version you accepted keeps applying to the copy you have, though we may not offer you updates released under the new version. Changes never take away rights you already have under a version you accepted. We may make changes that don't affect your rights, such as fixing typos or updating contact details, by posting a new version at gripspeak.com/terms.
